Center partners expand food perspectives
The Food Policy Research Center (FPRC) was formed in 2012 as part of a USDA-funded initiative with the shared goals of improving public and legislative decision-making through the dissemination of information about the impacts of agriculture and food-related policy. The University of Minnesota Food Policy Research Center brings experts together from a wide range of disciplines, including the College of Food, Agricultural, and Natural Resource Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Humphrey School of Public Affairs, University of Minnesota Extension, School of Public Health, College of Liberal Arts, and with some 20 other units across the University. This robust network leverages the University of Minnesota expertise in analyzing food issues from a multitude of angles.
An Executive Committee was formed to provide:
- Oversight and accountablility for FPRC objectives and operations
- Promotion of active faculty engagement in their school or college
- Oversight of training for new policy analysts and of faculty development
- Oversight of the information dissemination plan
The Executive Committee members, with leadership responsibilities within their own colleges, are well positioned and well connected through numerous strategic partnerships to bring broad support from other disciplines and institutions.
Faculty representing the UMN colleges and schools that performed the policy research analyses formed the Steering Committee and provided:
- Diverse subject matter expertise on consumers, food, and nutrition to support policy horizon scanning
- Develop food policy research analysis projects
- Partner with stakeholders and subject matter experts in the farm and agricultural sectors, environment, and rural families, households, and economies
- Recruit faculty to serve on Integrated Policy Research Teams
- Catalyze graduate student/analyst policy training programs
The Steering Committee members all are widely recognized experts in their respective fields and share a commitment to transdisciplinary, systems-based approaches to food and nutrition policy analyses.
